Emma E. Furth M.D.

r. Emma (Beth) Furth is a Professor of Pathology and Laboratory medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where she heads the Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Pathology Program. She serves as director of the GI/pancreas/liver and separate surgical pathology fellowship programs, and is associate director of surgical pathology. She received both her B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After receiving her M.D. from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, she elected to do an internship in internal medicine at Rush University before beginning her pathology residency (AP/CP) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where she has remained as a faculty member. Her research encompasses both basic science and clinical studies, with particular emphasis on developing and implementing quantitative, mathematical techniques. She has published extensively in the areas of GI and liver diseases. In addition, Dr. Furth is a devoted teacher, winning many teaching awards including the prestigious Christian Lindback award.
