Emily Steinhagen, MD, FACS, FASCRS, is a colorectal surgeon at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She is the Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency Program and the Clerkship Director for the third-year medical student clerkship in surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. 

Dr. Steinhagen received her medical degree from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She completed her general surgery residency at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and her colorectal surgery residency at the University of Chicago. She also completed a research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she developed her expertise in hereditary colorectal cancer syndromes and early-onset colorectal cancer. 

Dr. Steinhagen’s clinical expertise is reflected in her academic work: she has published over 100 articles, abstracts, and chapters on a variety of topics including colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, anorectal diseases such as hemorrhoid and abscess/fistula, anal dysplasia, minimally invasive surgery, and surgical education and training. She has been invited to deliver CME lectures, develop workshops and training programs, and contributes to scientific publications both regionally and nationally. Dr. Steinhagen is also an active member of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the Society for Endoscopic and Gastrointestinal Surgeons, the Association for Surgical Education, and other national societies.
