Dr. Eliana Marino is a Principal Research Fellow and Head of the Immunology and Diabetes Laboratory at the School of Biomedical Sciences, Monash University. She and her team are trying to identify potential new mechanisms focusing on how diet, the microbiota and microbial SCFA may affects the immune system, gut homoeostasis and therefore improving the burden of people with diabetes and related complications. Dr. Eliana Marino completed her BSc studies with first class in Venezuela (1998) and began her research career working at the Venezuelan Institute of Scientific Research (IVIC), where she published 2 first author papers. Then in Australia she was awarded with the NHMRC -Dora Lush Biomedical Postgraduate Research Scholarship and received her PhD from New South Wales University in 2010.
She completed 5 years of postdoctoral research between The Garvan Institute for Medical Research in Sydney and working with Prof. Charles Mackay at Monash University in Melbourne. After a brief period as a research officer she was awarded a JDRF Early Career Fellowship in 2013 and in 2014 awarded the prestigious Type 1 Millennium Award from Diabetes Australia - the largest allocated funding in Victoria. Dr. Marinos career has been characterized by several important research advances in the field of immunology, inflammation and autoimmunity, specifically in B cell migr.
