Egija Zaura (1971) will be appointed as URC professor in Oral Microbial Ecology at ACTA, at the department of Preventive Dentistry. The focus of her research is on understanding the processes that steer acquisition of a healthy microbiome and that sustain the maintenance of oral health. She is also interested in the link between oral and systemic health.
Within a recent EU-project she and her colleagues found that a single antibiotic dose did not affect the oral ecosystem, while it had a long-lasting ecological impact on the microbiome of the gut. Her clinical background in dentistry and her expertise in oral microbial ecology and bioinformatics provide a unique basis for her interdisciplinary research. She is an internationally renowned expert in the field of microbial ecology.
