Egbert Smit MD, PhD

Prof. Dr. EF (Egbert) Smit is a pulmonologist with a focus on lung cancer. He trained as a pulmonologist at the University Medical Center Groningen after obtaining his Ph.D. in 1990 on clinical and translational research into lung carcinoma. Since 1997 he has worked successively at the VU Medical Center (with a short break) until 2014 and at NKI-AvL until 2021. Since 1986, Egbert Smit has been involved in basic research and clinical research, ranging from chemotherapy studies to the treatment of metastatic lung cancer. He has been a PI of many national and international phase II and III studies. In the last 10 years, the focus of his research has been on translational oncology and molecular imaging. Since October 2021, he has been head of the Department of Pulmonary Diseases at the LUMC.
