Graduated Cum Laude from Semmelweis University School of Medicine. Subsequently, she conducted medical research at Harvard University. She completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology and her Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship at Robert Wood Johnson UMDNJ. She is a pioneer in the field of Fetal Therapy- Fetal Surgery. She described the first case of a fetoscopic removal of an oral teratoma, the first fetal bronchoscopy, and the taxonomy classification of twin gestations.

Dr. Kontopoulos has extensive experience in fetal ultrasound, prenatal diagnostic techniques, and fetal surgery. Dr. Kontopoulos, as Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine, has always enjoyed teaching and has previously served as Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship Director. She is the author of numerous peer-reviewed articles in leading medical journals and a frequent speaker at national and international meetings. She is a member of the International Society of Twin Studies and of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as of the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.

She is a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine and a peer reviewer for the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Kontopoulos has been featured in the media, including the major TV news channels, as well as other National and International media.
