Edward Kwee, Ph.D., is a biologist and measurement science researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, where he specializes in gene delivery systems, cell and gene therapy, regenerative medicine, and advanced therapeutic measurement standards. Since joining NIST in 2016, he has led and contributed to initiatives focused on improving the reproducibility, characterization, and standardization of viral and non-viral gene delivery technologies.
Kwee’s research centers on developing quantitative and cell-based assays for evaluating gene delivery systems, including viral vector infectivity and advanced imaging-based analytical methods. He also works on novel light-scattering and quantitative phase imaging techniques to characterize gene delivery particles and therapeutic cell systems. In addition to his research activities, he plays a leadership role in international biotechnology standards development through ISO Technical Committee 276 on Biotechnology, helping advance global harmonization of analytical methods for gene delivery systems.
Before joining NIST, Kwee conducted graduate research at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute and completed an NRC Postdoctoral Research Associateship at NIST. He earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and his B.S. in Biological Engineering from Cornell University.
