Edward C. Benzel MD

Dr Edward Benzel is a Neurosurgeon and Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery. He also serves as Medical Co-Director of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation Spine Research Laboratory and Course Director of the Annual Cleveland Spine Review: Hands-On. Benzel earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and received the Millman Award as the student who best exemplifies the characteristics of an ideal physician. He continued his medical training at the Medical College of Wisconsin Clinics with an internship and residency in Neurosurgery, and a fellowship in Spine Surgery and Spinal Cord Injury.

Dr Benzel has been actively involved in the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), American Association of Neurological Surgery (AANS), North American Spine Society (NASS), World Spinal Column Society (WSCS), and Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS). Dr Benzel is also one of the founding members of the Lumbar Spine Research Society (LSRS).

Throughout his career, Dr Benzel has been a sought-after reviewer for numerous spine journals. He served as Co-Chairman of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Neurosurgery (2003-2004) and currently acts as Chairman of the Review Board for the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine. He has been a reviewer for Neurosurgery, Spine, and The Spine Journal, and is an ad hoc reviewer for several other scientific journals in the field of spine and neurosurgery.
