Edward A. Bayer is a professor in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel. Since the early 1970s, he has been involved in the development of the avidin-biotin system as a general tool in the biological sciences. Together with Meir Wilchek, he received the Sarstedt Award for their contributions to the avidin-biotin system for biomedical analysis. In collaborative studies with Raphael Lamed, he introduced the cellulosome concept in the early 1980s, and designer cellulosomes in the mid-1990’s. He was organizer and Co-chair of the first Gordon Research Conference on "Cellulases and Cellulosomes", and he served as Chairman of the same conference in 2001. He has authored over 300 articles and reviews in both fields and has co-edited Volume 184 on "Avidin-biotin technology" of the Methods in Enzymology series. He is an Editor of the review journal, Biotechnology Advances, Associate Editor of Biotechnology for Biofuels, and on the Editorial Board of Current Opinion in Biotechnology and Industrial Biotechnology. In 2002, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology.
