Dr. Eduardo Borges da Fonseca received his medical training at the Federal University of Paraiba in Brazil and became a Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology registered with the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetricians in 1998. He subsequently received a Masters's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil focusing his research on the causes of prematurity. Dr. Fonseca furthered his research interests with a fellowship at the King’s College Hospital in London working with Professor Nicolaides on the relationship and treatment of cervical length to premature birth. Dr. Fonseca has published several papers on the relationship of preterm birth to cervical length and in 2003 was the lead author of one of the two key papers regarding the use of progesterone in the prevention of preterm birth.

The most important research was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007, in which nearly 25 thousand pregnant women were screened for preterm birth and those found with a short cervical length took vaginal progesterone. He is currently President of the Perinatology Branch of the Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetricians and Senior Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical School at the Federal University of Paraiba in Brazil and his research interests include prevention of preterm birth and screening of fetal abnormalities. He has written eight books and more than 60 chapters in Brazilian books.
