Dr. Ece Karatan joined Academic Affairs on August 1, 2018. As Vice Provost for Research. In this role, she is responsible for facilitating and expanding university-wide faculty and student-based research/creative activities by obtaining necessary resources, developing administrative infrastructure, fostering intra institutional and external collaborations, and building sustainable funding opportunities. Additionally, she will oversee the work of campus-wide research entities, the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Office of Research Protections, Research Data Analysis, and the Office of Grants, Resources, and Services. She will also chair the University Research Council and facilitate a strong relationship with the Office of Special Funds Accounting and other offices on campus to increase the research portfolio of the campus

Dr. Karatan received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois. She then worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Argonne National Laboratory and Tufts-New England Medical Center performing research in Biotechnology and Microbiology, respectively. She joined the Appalachian State Biology Department as an Assistant Professor in 2005, was tenured and promoted to Associate Professor in 2011, and promoted to Professor in 2016. Prior to joining Academic Affairs, Karastan had served as the Director of the Graduate Program in the Biology Department since 2012.

Dr. Karatan has many years of research experience working with National Institutes of Health (NIH) - National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases funded grants, has served on multiple NIH review panels, values the importance of student participation in research, and has an extensive history of collaborations with other faculty at Appalachian.
