E. Robert Feroli Jr., Pharm.D., FASHP, Medication Safety Officer, The Johns Hopkins Hospital. One of Bob’s primary responsibilities is to help minimize patient harm caused by medication errors using both prospective and retrospective methodologies. In this regard, Bob is the chairman of the Medication Error Reduction Implementation Team (MERIT). MERIT is a subcommittee of the Johns Hopkins Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and is charge with overseeing issues involving the safe use of medications including those safety items mandated by regulatory agencies (e.g., FDA, Board of Pharmacy) and standard setting agencies (e.g., JCAHO).

Bob established a Medication-Use Safety Pharmacy Specialty Residency. This program has achieved ASHP accreditation and has had two graduates, both of whom are now practicing as Medication Safety Officers. Bob has extensive experience visiting international Hospitals that have formed affiliations with Johns Hopkins International. During these visits, Bob provides consultation focusing on the Medication-Use system to improve safety, efficiency, therapeutic appropriateness and compliance with Joint Commission International (JCI) standards. Bob also teaches on topics of rational therapeutics and safe medication-use practices. He has faculty appointments at The Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine and Nursing, and the University of Maryland Schools of Pharmacy and Nursing.
