Duncan Learmonth graduated in Medicine from Birmingham University in 1982. He had previously obtained a BSc Honours degree in Physiology and Biochemistry at Southampton University. He was an Anatomy Lecturer at Birmingham Medical School in 1983.He trained in Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery in Birmingham and Leicester.He obtained his FRCS in 1986 and awarded his accreditation in Orthopaedic Surgery in 1993 and placed on the Specialist Register.During his specialist Orthopaedic training he was awarded the following fellowships:Thackray Knee Fellow Leicester, Knee Fellow at the Clinic de Maussins Paris, Sportsmed Knee and Shoulder Fellow Adelaide Australia.

He was awarded the National Prize for Orthopaedic Registrars (BOTA) for the best research paper presented at the British Orthopaedic Association Meeting 1993.

He was appointed as an Orthopaedic Knee and Shoulder Surgeon at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in 1993, establishing at the same time his private practice at the Priory Hospital. He started a Knee and Shoulder service at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital which now has 7 surgeons. In 2004 established the private Birmingham Knee and Shoulder Clinic with Marcus Green and Samir Massoud. He now works full time at the BKSC but still has an Honorary consultant and Senior Lecturer post at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.

Mr. Learmonth is an established authority in the knee and shoulder surgery in the UK speaking at National and International Orthopaedic Association Meetings (Norway, Australia and Greece). He is involved in Surgical training both locally and nationally.Training both Registrars and Consultants in Arthroscopic Surgical techniques. He has published over 25 papers on knee and shoulder conditions and established research team at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital.
