Douwe F. Postma was born in Groningen on April 20th 1982. After completing secondary school at ‘de Waezenburg’ in Leek, he started studying Medicine at the ‘Rijksuniversiteit Groningen’ in 2000. During his studies, he spent one month at Mangochi District Hospital, Malawi, and three months at Haydom Lutheran Hospital, Tanzania, for clinical electives in Tropical Medicine. He received his medical degree in 2007 and started working as an emergency room physician at the ‘Tjongerschans hospital in Heerenveen. From April 2009 he worked as a resident in Internal Medicine at the ‘Diakonessenhuis hospital in Utrecht, where he began his training to become a consultant/ specialist in Internal Medicine in September 2009, under the supervision of Dr. A.F. Muller. At the end of 2010, he was given the opportunity to start working on the CAP-START study through a collaboration of the Diakonessenhuis Utrecht and the departments of Internal Medicine & Infectious diseases and Medical Microbiology at the UMC Utrecht. This research formed the basis for his Ph.D. thesis and was supervised by Prof. dr. M.J.M. Bonten, Prof. dr. I.M. Hoepelman, Dr. J.J. Oosterheert, and Dr. L.J.R. van Elden. He completed a post-graduate MSc in Clinical Epidemiology during his time as a Ph.D. student. From January 2016, Douwe continued his Internal Medicine training at the UMC Utrecht, under the supervision of Prof. dr. H.A.H. Kaasjager. He completed his fellowship in Infectious Diseases under the supervision of Prof. dr. A.I.M. Hoepelman.
