Douglas Carlson, M.D. earned an undergraduate degree from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1981. He then completed his medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, Springfield, IL in 1984, and residency in pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, St. Louis, MO in 1987. Prior to coming to SIU and HSHS St. John’s Children’s Hospital in 2014, Dr. Carlson was with Washington University and St. Louis Children’s Hospital for over 25 years. There he was the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Patient Safety and Clinical Quality as well as the Director of the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. Dr. Carlson’s research focuses on improving processes of care. Much of that work has focused on improving access and outcomes in pediatric sedation. Dr. Carlson is recognized internationally for his work in pediatric sedation. Dr. Carlson continues to provide care to children and adolescents in the emergency department and inpatient pediatric unit of HSHS St. John’s Hospital. Dr. Carlson is active in the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Society of Hospital Medicine and the Academic Pediatric Association. He is a member of the American Board of Pediatrics Sub-Board on Pediatric Hospital Medicine. Dr. Carlson is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine.
