Don received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Adelaide in 1982. This work, under the supervision of Professor Bill Elliott and Dr Brian May, involved the analysis of extracellular enzyme synthesis by a strain of Bacillus. He then undertook post-doctoral work for five years at the University of Auckland in the research group of Professor Peter Bergquist. This work involved the construction of genomic libraries of thermophilic bacteria and using those libraries to clone and express genes encoding for thermophilic enzymes.
