Dr. Dominic Micklewright is currently the Dean of Undergraduate Education at the University of Essex. Prior to this, he was Dean of Partnerships from 2013 until 2021. He has over a decade of senior leadership experience in Higher Education and has carried out several executive board-level positions as well as roles as a Dean, Associate Dean, Director of Sport & Exercise Science, and Director of Postgraduate Education. He has experience in strategy writing, developing key performance indicators, and successfully delivering associated action plans. He has a track record of working effectively as part of the senior leadership team and in representing the University with major external stakeholders. In both Dean roles, he has led major initiatives to improve fairness and inclusion in higher education and cares deeply about fairness and opportunity in higher education. He has led a significant expansion of the University’s partnership portfolio including online degrees, transnational education, and recruitment partnerships. He was the University's lead for internationalization and has led major work which has kept Essex in the top 25 universities ranked in the world for international outlook. More recently he has led Essex's submission to the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings in which the University was ranked 86th in the World out of over 1400 participating institutions.

Professor Dominic Micklewright was appointed at the University of Essex in 2004 and is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (CPsychol), a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM), and a Fellow of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES). He has written numerous journal articles and three book chapters on perception, fatigue, and decision-making on the regulation and performance of endurance exercise. He is a former editor of the highly-ranked journal PLOS One.

Professor Micklewright is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (PFHEA) and has almost two decades of scholarly experience at the University of Essex, lecturing on subjects including sports psychology, cognition, research methods, and statistics. He has supervised twelve Ph.D. students, and over a hundred undergraduate and master's research projects. He is the recipient of both the University’s ‘Excellence in Teaching Award’ and the student-nominated ‘Apple for the Teacher Award.

Professor Micklewright has led a number of higher education initiatives including learner analytics, technology-enhanced learning and assessment, online and blended-learning degrees, transnational education, degree apprenticeships, industry partnerships, e-portfolios, and internationalization. He has led the quality assurance and quality enhancement of degrees at departmental, faculty, and university levels, including online and transnational education, and has chaired hundreds of institutional validations, course approvals, and periodic reviews. He is an invited member of several education advisory boards including that of Konstanz University in Germany and Amity Group in India. He is a very experienced quality assurance reviewer of higher education having carried out numerous external examining positions during the past 15 years at universities throughout the UK and internationally.
