Dipti Dinkar Nayak MS, PhD

Dipti Nayak is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology. Her laboratory develops CRISPR-Cas genome editing tools to study methane metabolism in the model marine methanogenic archaeon Methanosarcina acetivorans. Research in the Nayak lab spans several scales of biological organization, from enzymes and cells to microbial communities, with the ultimate goal of gaining mechanistic insights into the physiology and evolution of archaea that play a vital role in the marine methane cycle. 

Nayak received an M.S. in environmental engineering from Stanford University in 2009 and a Ph.D. in biology from Harvard University in 2014. Before coming to UC Berkeley, she carried out postdoctoral research with William Metcalf at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a Simons Foundation postdoctoral fellow of the Life Sciences Research Foundation and as a Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology postdoctoral fellow.
