Dr. Dimitrios Evangelopoulos obtained his B.Sc. in Molecular Biology and Genetics from the University of Thrace, Greece. He then pursued a Ph.D. in Molecular Microbiology under the supervision of Professor Sanjib Bhakta from Birkbeck, University of London, and Professor Edith Sim from the University of Oxford, evaluating potential mycobacterial drug targets and antimycobacterial compounds. Following his Ph.D., Dimitrios joined the Centre for Clinical Microbiology and the laboratory of Professor Timothy McHugh at UCL to be part of the European consortium, PreDiCT-TB. While at UCL, Dimitrios explored transcriptomic signatures of drug action in Mycobacterium tuberculosis in an effort to develop drug efficacy models and molecular biomarkers to quantify bacterial cells from infected tissues. He then subsequently joined the Laboratory of Mycobacterial Metabolism and Antibiotic Research led by Dr. Luiz Carvalho at the newly formed Francis Crick Institute. At the Crick, Dimitrios was investigating antimicrobial resistance mechanisms in tuberculosis by applying interdisciplinary approaches. He was also involved in drug discovery projects utilizing metabolomics to ascertain mechanisms of drug action. Dimitrios joined the Department of Microbial Diseases at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in October 2019 as a Lecturer in Microbiology where he is planning to establish a research program focusing on antimicrobial resistance.
