Dik van Gent received his PhD in Biology from the Free University Amsterdam on the basis of a research project conducted at the Netherlands Cancer Institute on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Integrase protein. He did his postdoctoral training at the National Institutes of Health and developed an in vitro system to study V(D)J recombination. He currently studies the Non-homologous End-joining pathway of DNA double-strand break repair.

He is mainly interested in the mechanism of Non-homologous end-joining, and how different pathways of DNA double-strand break repair collaborate to counteract DNA damage to survive radiation damage and to prevent tumorigenesis. As of September 2013, Dik van Gent is program director of the MSc Molecular Medicine program at Erasmus MC.
