Dr. Diego M. Castillo Villegas has a degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Navarra (2001) and is a specialist via MIR in Pulmonology (Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, 2007). He completed his training in the pulmonary hypertension unit of the Hospital Clinic (Barcelona), in the Hospital of Mataró, and in the Hospital del Mar in Barcelona. Later (2009) he joined the Pulmonology Service of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau as an associate doctor. This allowed him to learn from Drs. José Manuel Rodríguez-Arias (pulmonologist) and Tomás Franquet (Radiologist), are both leaders in pulmonary fibrosis in Spain.

In 2013 he moved to London (United Kingdom) to work in the pulmonary fibrosis unit at the Royal Brompton Hospital, led by Prof. Athol Wells. This unit is a world reference in the management of this pathology. For more than a year, Dr. Castillo was able to work as an assistant doctor in said unit, which allowed him to expand his knowledge about the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.

At the end of 2014, he rejoined the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, and since then he has led the Pulmonary Fibrosis Unit. He also collaborates with the Sant Pau Biomedical Research Institute (IIB-Sant Pau) as head of the lung fibrogenesis unit of the chronic respiratory diseases research group (GRECO).
