Dr. Diego L. Fernandez is an Orthopedic and Hand Surgeon who was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and graduated from St. Andrew’s Scots School in Buenos Aires in 1963. He received his medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires in 1970. Trained in Orthopedic Surgery and Hand Surgery under Prof. Eduardo Zancolli in Buenos Aires, with Harold Boyd and Lee Milford at the Campbell Clinic, Memphis Tennessee, and with Prof. M.E.Müller in Bern, Switzerland. He was Chief of the Hand Surgery Unit within the Orthopedic Department until 1977. Thereafter he became a staff member of the Orthopedic Department of the University of Berne from 1978 until 1983 under Prof. Müller and Prof. R. Ganz. He was Chief of Traumatology of the Surgical Department, Kantonsspital Aarau, Switzerland between 1983 and 1992. From 1992 until march 2017 he was a Staff Member of the Orthopedic Department at the Lindenhof Hospital in Bern. Until August 2018 he was in private practice at the Hand Team Bern and Consultant orthopedic surgeon for elbow, wrist, and hand at the Siloah Hospital in Bern.

Currently, he continues teaching Hand and Upper Extremity surgery as an international consultant. In 1991 Dr. Fernandez became Associate Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and in 2004 he was promoted to Honorary Professor of the University of Berne. Professionally, he is a devoted upper extremity, hip, and trauma surgeon. Throughout his career, he has written over 155 articles and book chapters in the peer-reviewed orthopedic literature. His particular academic interest is related to surgery of the wrist joint including the treatment of distal radius and scaphoid fractures as well as their complications. He has authored numerous articles and chapters relating to these topics and together with Dr. Jesse Jupiter he published a comprehensive book entitled: “Fractures of the Distal Radius: a practical approach to management”.
