Professor Dewey Ryu received his B.S. and Ph. D. both from MIT. During his 30-year tenure as a Professor at UC Davis, he has held Maynard Amerine Endowed Chair Professorship and Distinguished Chair Professor Fulbright Scholar. He has also served as the Director of Biochemical Engineering Program, Co-Director of NIH-GMS Biotechnology-Biomolecular Engineering Training Program, and Director of USDA Research and Training Program for Biofuel and Chemicals from Renewable Resources. The Graduate Program Faculty Membership at UC Davis included Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Molecular and Cell Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and Food Science.

He has also served the National Science Foundation as the Director of the Biotechnology Program for two years. With his initiatives, stem cell engineering and metabolic pathway engineering research programs were developed and established at NSF. Before joining UC Davis, he had worked as a senior research engineer at the Squibb Institute for Medical Research (Bristol-Myers Squibb) where he facilitated the development of new and improved biomanufacturing process technologies for several therapeutics including antibiotics and steroids, as a Professor at MIT initiating Enzyme Engineering curriculum, and as a founding faculty member at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) where he had contributed significantly to the establishment of Biological Science and Biotechnology Department and its programs. Over the years, he has also provided services to many universities, professional and public organizations, and industries including advisory committee memberships, editorial board memberships, and many professional societies memberships. Among them, President of the Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association and the President of the Korean-American Community Association of Greater Sacramento.

He has published 224 peer-reviewed research publications and 11 book chapters. He has been granted 18 patents. He has given 311 invited lectures and seminars at national and international conferences, industrial research laboratories, and academic institutions. He has also trained more than 120 MS and Ph.D. graduate students and postdoctoral research scientists. Most of his scientific research contributions are relevant to the areas of biomolecular engineering, biopharmaceutical biotechnology, biomanufacturing technology, fermentation and enzyme technology, and renewable energy development.

He is the recipient of numerous honors, awards, and prizes. Senior Lecturer and Research Fellowships include Japan Society of Promotion of Science, Deutsche Forschungs Gesellschaft (DFG), Institute National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), and National Academy of Science - National Research Council. Selected honors and awards include the International Enzyme Engineering Award, International Biochemical Engineering Award, the Ho-Am (Samsung) Award for Outstanding Research Achievement in Biomolecular Engineering, Presidential Medal of Honor - National Order of Civil Merit for Scientific Contribution (Korea), Outstanding Research Award from Squibb Institute for Medical Research and Founding Fellow of American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering.
