Professor Haase is the Director of the Tumor Cytogenetics Laboratory and of the Laboratory for Specialised Haematologic Diagnostics in the Department of Haemotology and Oncology at Georg-August-University of Goettingen, Germany. Graduating from medical school at the University of Lubeck, Germany, Professor Haase continued at Lubeck and completed his M.D. in the Department of Internal Medicine. Professor Haase has been the director of the Tumor Cytogenetics Laboratory at the University of Goettingen since 1997 and was appointed to the position of assistant professor in 2003. Since 2006 he has also been the assistant medical director of the Tumor Cytogenetics Laboratory. His research and clinical focus include prognostic factors, genetics, and stem cell biology in AML, MDS, and other myeloid malignancies as well as establishing new prognostic scoring systems in MDS. Professor Haase also studies the relevance of genetic polymorphisms of DNA-repair and detoxification genes for AML and MDS, the relevance of iron overload for stem cell functions in MDS, and the establishment of FISH analysis of CD34+ cells from the peripheral blood as a diagnostic tool for screening and monitoring in patients with MDS. Recently, Professor Haase and his co-worker, Dr. Ganster succeeded to combine FISH with SNP analyses of circulating CD34+ cells in MDS to increase the amount of genetic information that can be derived from these assays. Professor Haase is a member of numerous German medical and scientific societies and participates in many other similar international organizations. He has published over 110 articles in international peer-reviewed journals.
