Dr. Despina Briana is an Associate Professor in Pediatrics-Neonatology at the 3rd Department of Pediatrics, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She graduated from the Athens University Medical School with a degree “Excellent” and during her medical education, she gained scholarships for distinguished performance from the National Institute of Scholarships. Her doctoral thesis on “Intrauterine Growth Restriction and Perinatal Bone Metabolism”, has been awarded an Academic Prize for Best Doctoral Thesis for the years 2010-2012 by the Athens University Medical School.
Dr. Briana participated in funded national and international research protocols. She has published 95 articles in peer-reviewed PubMed journals, which have been cited more than 1700 times (h-index=22, total impact factor> 300), and contributed to ten book chapters in International and Greek books. She has participated in lectures/presentations in >100 International and >70 Greek Congresses. Research fields: biomarkers and metabolic hormones in intrauterine growth restriction/fetal macrosomia, potential molecular mechanisms underlying DOHaD, angiogenic factors in normal and abnormal fetal growth, prematurity and necrotizing enterocolitis, bioactive substances and metabolome of early human milk, neurodevelopment, and twinning. She is an Associate Editor for the “Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine”, serves as a Reviewer for 50 PubMed journals, and is a member of the “International Foundation for Maternal Peri-conceptional and Peri-Neonatal Medicine.”
