Dermot Phelan, MD, PhD, FACC, is a staff cardiologist in the section of Cardiovascular Imaging in the Robert and Suzanne Tomsich Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, and Medical Director of the Sports Cardiology Center in the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He is an Assistant Professor at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University.
Dr. Phelan is a course Co-Director for the Cleveland Clinic echocardiography national meeting and serves on the Research Council of the American Society of Echocardiography. He is Co-Editor of the cardiology section of Disease Management, a free, online clinical resource authored by Cleveland Clinic physicians that has more than 800,000 page views per month. He is a contributing Expert Writer for the sports magazine, Stack.
Dr. Phelan is the team cardiologist for the Cleveland Cavaliers. He also serves on the Cardiac Screening Advisory Committee for the National Basketball Association. Dr. Phelan attends the National Football League Scouting Combine each year as the Cardiology Consultant for the team physicians. In this role, he reviews all of the cardiovascular testing for the players and makes decisions regarding safe participation at the Combine.
