Derek is a consultant at Shropshire-based Severn Hospice. He has practiced both as a GP and a lecturer both in the UK (in the Midlands and Co Durham) and in New Zealand. He is now a palliative care specialist. Education wise he has written and taught the Graduate Entry Course at Birmingham Medical School. He has been Clinical Teaching Fellow in County Durham where he also got his Diploma in Clinical Teaching. He has been Chair of the Palliative Care Congress 2016 and has lectured at Birmingham, Auckland (New Zealand) and Keele University. He has recently been granted a visiting Chair at Chester University.

As far as Ethics is concerned he has published widely on the subject. He attained a Masters in Health Care Ethics and Law. He helped to set up the Ethics Committee for the Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and is now a member of the Association of Palliative Medicine’s Ethics committee. He is currently studying a Philosophy Degree at University of London.
