Derek Van Amerongen MD, MS

Derek van Amerongen, MD, MS, FACOG, is Associate Professor in Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor for the Graduate School of Healthcare Administration at Xavier University in Cincinnati, OH. He also serves as Vice President and Medical Officer for Humana Health Plans of Ohio. In this role, he oversees the medical management and strategy for one of the nation's most innovative health plans. Dr van Amerongen earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College in Chicago, IL, and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Chicago, as well as received a master's degree in medical administration from the University of Wisconsin. He has written and presented extensively on managed care and health topics. His contributions have appeared in various publications including The New England Journal of Medicine, Physician Executive, Health Affairs, Journal of Reproductive Medicine, and Oncology. His first book, Networks and the Future of Medical Practice, won the 1998 Robert A. Henry Literary Award of the American College of Physician Executives. He has participated in a variety of projects focused on healthcare improvement, including Chair of the Women's Health Task Force of the American Association of Health Plans, Obesity Task Force for America's Health Insurance Plans, Board of Directors for URAC, and Executive Committee for the National Practitioner Data Bank. His community work includes serving as President of the Greater Cincinnati Alzheimer's Association and Advisory Board of the Salvation Army. In 2017, Dr van Amerongen was elected to the national Board of Directors of the Alzheimer's Association in Chicago.
