Dr. Derek Mahony is a graduate of the University of Sydney, Faculty of Dentistry. Dr. Mahony went on to complete his specialty training at the University of London, Masters Programme in Orthodontics. Further educational persuites include a semester at the Karolinska Institute, as a research fellow. He also maintains a fellowship at the American College of Dentists. He is currently the United Kingdom Regent of the Pierre Fauchard Academy (PFA).
Dr Mahony is considered a pioneer, throughout, the world, in raising dentist’s awareness of the need for early interceptive orthodontic treatment and related airway issues. Dr. Mahony has been actively involved in research that links constricted maxillary arch forms to nasal breathing problems. Research topics include adverse facial growth and systemic health problems such as nocturnal enuresis. He has presented over 4000 lectures on orthodontic topics in more than 120 countries.
As a practicing clinician, Dr. Mahony’s research interests are in the aetiology of malocclusion and the guidance of facial growth. Dr. Mahony is a member of the editorial board of five International dental journals. He is a visiting lecturer, in Orthodontics, at a number of Universities. Practices the full remit of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics including functional appliances, treatment of TMJ disorders, and the diagnosis and treatment of obstructive airway problems such as snoring and sleep apnoea.
