Dr. Banyard received a B.A in Cognitive Science from the University of Virginia before completing a combined M.D/M.B.A. degree from Meharry Medical College and Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management in Nashville, TN. He completed two post-doctoral research fellowships at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in head & neck tumor immunology and vascular biology as well as two years of general surgery training before joining the Center for Tissue Engineering.
Dr. Banyard’s primary research interests are in fat grafting, adipose-derived stem cells and stromal vascular fraction. He currently leads a team that is working to elucidate the role that mechanical stress plays on the induction of stem/progenitor cells found in adipose tissue. His other interests include human decellularized adipose tissue extracellular matrix, burn wound conversion, and medical device innovation. Since joining the lab, Dr. Banyard has co-authored 3 patent applications and over 60 manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations. He is a previous clinical fellow of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine and was recently awarded the National Endowment for Plastic Surgery Grant from the Plastic Surgery Foundation.
