Dr. Dereck DeLeon, MD, has been named chief academic officer for Cone Health. In this new role, he will lead Cone Health’s medical residency and fellowship programs. He will also have responsibility for research and the Greensboro Area Health Education Center (AHEC). DeLeon comes to Greensboro from Kaiser Permanente San Diego, where he served as the program director of family medicine. He was honored this year by the California Academy of Family Physicians Foundation as the Barbara Harris Award Winner for Educational Excellence.

DeLeon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in molecular biology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics from the University of Washington. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Universidad del Caribe de Cayey in Puerto Rico. DeLeon completed the Loma Linda University Family Medicine Residency at Riverside County Hospital in Riverside, California
