Dr. Denise began working for Evangelical Homes of Michigan 18 years ago and has served as president and CEO for the last 12 years. The 132-year-old organization was formed in 1879 by a church in Detroit. The organization started by taking care of older adults, widows, war orphans and children. A short time later, mothers of some orphans and war widows started moving in. “In the 1940s, we went through the largest period of growth, creating nursing homes that more resemble what our organization looks like today,” she said. The non-profit group is the oldest such organization in metro Detroit and serves 2,300 older adults. Its 1,000 employees deliver an array of services from retirement communities, skilled nursing, rehabilitation, hospice and a full spectrum of home care.
