Dr. Debasish Basu is a Professor of Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry, Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India, where he is involved in psychiatric service, postgraduate psychiatric teaching, research, and administration. Earlier, he has worked as a NIDA-INVEST Fellow at Yale University, Connecticut, USA, and later as a Consultant Psychiatrist (General Adult Psychiatry) in the Mersey Care NHS Trust, Southport, England and NHS Lothian, Livingston, Scotland. He holds specialist medical registration both in India and in the United Kingdom. His area of work includes general adult psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and dual diagnosis.
Dr Basu has been awarded several honours, distinctions, and awards, both at national and international levels. At the national level, he has received a total of 26 awards. At the international level, he was awarded the NIDA-INVEST International Research Fellowship by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA, under its International Visiting Scientists and Technical Exchange (INVEST) program, for one year. He conducted research in the area of psychiatric genetics with Professor Joel Gelernter at the Division of Psychiatric Genetics, Department of Psychiatry, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, from 31st January 2002 till 31st January 2003. He was also awarded the NHS International Fellowship by the National Health Service, Department of Health, Government of the United Kingdom, under its NHS International Fellowship Programme, to work as a Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry.
