Dawn I. Velligan, PhD, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Chief of the Division of Community Recovery, Research and Training, and Henry B. Dielmann Chair at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Velligan’s internationally recognized research program focuses on the development and testing of psychosocial treatments to improve medication interest and follow through and outcomes in schizophrenia. She is recognized as an expert on the assessment of adherence in clinical practice.

She developed Cognitive Adaptation Training, a unique treatment system designed to bypass the cognitive and motivational problems observed in serious mental illness and improve functional outcomes. This treatment has been disseminated to many countries around the world. Dr. Velligan is the author of numerous publications in high-impact journals and she has received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health, The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, as well as industry and private foundations. Dr. Velligan frequently serves as a consultant to industry and scientific investigators in the areas of symptom, assessment, medication adherence and follow-through, cognition, and functional outcomes.
