David William Roberts was born in Kingston, New York on January 26, 1950. He received an A.B. degree from Princeton University, an M.A. degree from Oxford University, and an M.D. degree from Dartmouth Medical School. He interned in surgery at the University of Utah and did his neurosurgical residency at Dartmouth.
br/> In 1982, he joined the staff of the Hitchcock Clinic and the faculty of Dartmouth Medical School, at the rank of Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1988 and Professor in 1994. From 1987-1996 he was on the Board of Trustees of the Hitchcock Foundation, and from 1990-1997 he served on the Board of Governors of the Hitchcock Clinic. In 1997 he became Chair of the Section of Neurosurgery at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and Director of the neurosurgical residency training program. While retaining those responsibilities, he was appointed in 2000 to the position at Dartmouth Medical School of Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, and the following year to the Alma Hass Milham Distinguished Chair in Clinical Medicine.

He has served as President of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery (1996-1998) and President of the Society of University Neurosurgeons (1997-1998). He is a member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Epilepsy Society, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and New England Neurosurgical Society. He is on the Editorial Boards of Neurosurgery, the Neurosurgery, Computer Aided Surgery (formerly the Journal of Image Guided Surgery), the Journal of Radiosurgery, and Neurosurgical Review. He is the Editor of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, and a Commentator for Neurologia medico-chirugica.
