Dr. David T. Hughes, MD is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Endocrine Surgery. He is an Associate Program Director for the General Surgery Residency program and Director of the Procedure-Based Care Branch and the Surgery Residency Preparation Course in the Medical School Dr. Hughes graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in biology from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska from 1999. He went on to receive his medical degree from the Creighton University School of Medicine with Alpha Omega Alpha honors in 2003. He then completed his internship and residency in General Surgery at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire.

After completing the Norman Thompson Endocrine Surgery Fellowship at the University of Michigan in 2010, he served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Dr. Hughes has been a faculty member in the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan since 2012. Dr. Hughes’ clinical interests include surgical diseases of the endocrine system including the thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, and pancreas. His academic interests include clinical research in the treatment of thyroid and adrenal cancer as well as a focus on surgical education. He is an active member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Thyroid Association, the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons, and the Association for Surgical Education.
