David Pencheon is a UK trained doctor and he leads the NHS Sustainable Development Unit (England) which develops organisations, people, tools, and policy to help the NHS in England fulfil its potential as a leading sustainable and low carbon organisation.

David has always had a keen interest in sustainability and he helped to found the Unit in April 2008. Since then, he and his team have worked tirelessly to promote the benefits of sustainable healthcare not only nationally but also internationally. He was awarded an OBE in the New Year’s Honours List 2012 for services to public health and the NHS.

David was previously the Director of the NHS Eastern Region Public Health Observatory from 2001 to 2007, serving the East of England. He has worked as joint Director of Public Health, a Public Health Training Programme Director in the East of England, with the NHS R&D programme, and in China in the early 1990s with Save the Children Fund (UK).
