Dr. Hoelzinger studied Medicine at the University of Vienna, Austria and was inspired by such notable predecessors as Theodor Billroth, Ignaz Semmelweis, Karl Landsteiner, Carl Rokitansky and Sigmund Freud. His goal had always been to become a primary care physician, but perhaps it was listening to lectures in the Wenckebach auditorium that later steered him towards Cardiology.

During his Cardiology Fellowship in Phoenix, Arizona he was fortunate to work with Dr. Michael Vawter who had traveled to Switzerland to participate in one of the first coronary angioplasty courses given by Andreas Grünzig, and then was the first to bring this new technique back to Arizona in the early 1980’s. Thus began a 30 year career in Interventional as well as Clinical Cardiology, participating in the evolution of angioplasty, atherectomy, eximer laser and coronary stents, placing the first FDA-approved coronary stent in Arizona in 1993. He has continued in the tradition of teaching medical students and residents throughout his career, as he was taught by those before him.

His focus has always been on the holistic care of the patient, as well as cost-effective medicine. This led to a recent transition out of clinical practice into administrative medicine, focusing on the new challenge of optimizing efficient care delivery to Medicaid and Medicare patients.
