Dr. David Calvo Cuervo is a cardiologist specializing in cardiac electrophysiology. He combines his care work, with a special dedication to the field of complex cardiac arrhythmias (AF, VT, and VF), with research work focused for more than 10 years on the study of the mechanisms that initiate and sustain cardiac fibrillation. Since its inception in basic research in cardiac fibrillation (Center for Arrhythmia Research; UP-State New York University; 2007), and the realization of its PhD focused on the mechanisms of human AF (University Complutense of Madrid; 2010), has moved to the Arrhythmias Unit of the Central Hospital of Asturias (2012) his research experience and has established in this center a line of research in arrhythmic mechanisms and the study of cardiovascular diseases with risk of cardiac fibrillation.
The results of this line directed by Dr.David Calvo are demonstrated by the publications obtained in the last 5 years in reference journals (12 original articles in journals D1 and Q1) and have also been recognized by the international scientific community in the form of (i) an award from the Cardiac Electrophysiology Society (USA; 2012), (ii) four awards from the Arrhythmia Section of the Spanish Society of Cardiology and (iii) several editorial articles that accompany their original research. Also, Dr. David Calvo has been selected by the Spanish Society of Cardiology to be part of a group of 4 professionals who will establish the guidelines for the ablation of AF within the framework of SEC-Excellent performance, professor responsible for the module of AF and atrial flutter of the "University Master of Advances in Cardiology" of the Spanish Society of Cardiology and is professor of the atrial fibrillation module of the "Master in Clinical Cardiac Arrhythmology and Interventionist ”of the Spanish Society of Cardiology / Menéndez Pelayo University.
He belongs to the editorial committee of the Spanish Journal of Cardiology and acts as a proofreader of scientific articles for different journals, among which are: Europace, Circulation Arrhythmia & Electrophysiology, and Spanish Journal of Cardiology. He is, as of October 2019, President-elect of the Heart Rhythm Association of the Spanish Society of Cardiology and as of July 2021 Chief Medical Officer of Xana Smartt Neurostimulation, a start-up company focusing on non-invasive modulation of symptom-vagal balance with potential for improvement of physiological processes and to treat cardiac and extracardiac disorders.
