David Carling studied Biochemistry at Bristol University before undertaking a PhD at Dundee University investigating the role of phosphorylation in the regulation of acetyl-CoA carboxylase and fatty acid synthesis in the liver. During his PhD, David purified and characterized a novel protein kinase termed the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). After a post-doctoral fellowship in Dundee, he was awarded an MRC Training Fellowship and moved to the MRC Clinical Research Centre to learn molecular biology techniques in order to clone AMPK. David moved to the MRC Clinical Sciences Centre in London in 1992, establishing his own group, and has remained there ever since. He was made Professor in Biochemistry at Imperial College in 2004. David's research continues to focus on the investigation of the regulation and physiological role of AMPK.
