Darius Mirza studied Medicine at the University of Bombay. After early surgical training in India and a two year Transplant Fellowship at the University of Vienna Hospital, he came to Birmingham in 1991 to train further in adult and paediatric transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery. He was appointed as Consultant Transplant Surgeon at the Freeman Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1996 before moving back to Birmingham when appointed Consultant Transplant/HPBsurgeon at the Queen Elizabeth and Children’s Hospitals, Birmingham in 1997.

In addition to liver transplantation, his clinical and research interests lie in the areas of “marginal” donors, technical innovations (split livers, transplantation for intestinal failure), biliary strictures and metastatic liver cancer.
