Dr. Fliser was born in 1962 in Maribor, Slovenia, and completed his medical studies at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. He started his junior academic career in the Division of Nephrology at the Ruperto-Carola University, Heidelberg, Germany, where he was appointed as Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1998. In 1999 he moved to Hannover and was appointed as Associate Professor of Medicine in the Department of Nephrology at the Hannover Medical School. Since 2007, he is Professor of Medicine and Head of the Department of Internal Medicine IV (Renal & Hypertensive Disease) and of the Transplant Centre at the Saarland University Medical Centre in Homburg, Germany.

His main areas of research are progression of chronic kidney disease, endothelial and vascular biology including endothelial regeneration, and cardiovascular complications in patients with chronic kidney disease, with a strong commitment to translational medicine. Dr. Fliser has authored more than 260 original publications (PubMed 1/2015), which are widely cited (current Hirsch Factor: 56). In 2005, he has received the prestigious Franz Volhard Award of the German Society of Nephrology.
