Dr. Sterman graduated from Brown University, received his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, and served his internship, residency, fellowship, and postdoctoral research fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Currently, Dan is Associate Professor of Medicine and Surgery at the Perelman School of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is the Chief of the Section of Interventional Pulmonology and Thoracic Oncology, and Co-Director of the Penn Mesothelioma and Pleural Program.
Dr. Sterman is a distinguished physician-scientist, educator, and clinician. He is internationally recognized for his research on cancer immunotherapy and translational research in Thoracic Oncology. Dr. Sterman’s research interests include gene therapy and vaccine therapy for lung cancer, along with novel therapies for pleural malignancies including mesothelioma. His clinical protocols using gene therapy for mesothelioma places him among the international leaders in this field.
Dr. Sterman has also recently begun a series of additional clinical trials aimed at understanding whether genetic immunotherapy is a viable treatment option for mesothelioma, metastatic pleural disease and other thoracic malignancies. He is the past president of the International Mesothelioma Interest Group, and the immediate past-president of the American Association of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology.
Dr. Sterman will succeed Dr. Doreen Addrizzo-Harris, Associate Professor of Medicine, who is currently Interim Director of Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. We would like to thank Dr. Addrizzo-Harris for her dedication in leading the division.
