His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, where he explores innovative techniques to treat vocal fold paralysis, and airway stenosis, and enhance voice and swallowing rehabilitation for those who have undergone treatment for head and neck cancers. He has been awarded several grants for his work, and he regularly presents at national conferences. Through his research, Dr. Cates continues to advance the field, ensuring that patients benefit from the latest scientific developments in laryngology.

Dr. Cates completed his fellowship in laryngology and care of the professional voice at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of California, San Francisco. He completed his residency training at the University of California, Davis, where he also practiced for six years before joining the faculty at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois.
