Dr. Hanu-Cernat qualified in Medicine in1989 and trained in Anaesthesia in Birmingham. In 1998 she was awarded the fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA) followed by the CSST in Anaesthesia in 2002. She developed her expertise in Pain Medicine through a two-year fellowship programme in Australia and New Zealand.

She was awarded the Fellowship of the Faculty Pain Medicine of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, through examination in 2005 (FFPMANZCA). She is a Fellow in Interventional Pain Practice (FIPP) through examination of the World Institute of Pain.

She is a founder member of the Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, which is now in its third year (FFPMRCA). Dr Hanu-Cernat has a strong interest in research, has designed and conducted observational and cohort studies and large-scale multinational, multicentre randomized controlled trials. This work resulted in poster presentations, conference proceedings and published original papers.
