Dr. Umetsu received a BA from Columbia and an MD/PhD from New York University. He completed an internship/residency and a fellowship in allergy/immunology at Harvard Medical School. He moved to Stanford, where he became a tenured Professor, Chief of Allergy/Immunology, and Director of the Asthma Center. In 2005 he returned to Harvard Medical School as the Prince Turki al Saud Professor. He has published >200 manuscripts and holds nine patents. His research interests include the immunobiology of allergic diseases and asthma, subsets of CD4 T cells, NKT cells, Treg cells, innate lymphoid cells, and translational medicine in asthma and food allergy. In 2013 Dr. Umetsu moved to Genentech as Principal Medical Director in Respiratory and Allergic Diseases and is currently the Global Development Lead for Xolair. Dr. Umetsu has been selected annually since 2001 by Americans Top Doctors and has served on the American Board of Allergy and Immunology, the FDA Allergenic Products Advisory Committee, and as Chair of the NIH Immunological Sciences Study Section. He has trained numerous fellows, postdocs, and graduate students, many of who have gone on to become independent investigators or chairs of departments.
