Dr. Lopez gained his undergraduate medical qualifications in 2007 from Imperial College, London, with a period of elective study also undertaken at Harvard University, Boston USA. During his time at Imperial, he was also awarded an honours degree in medical sciences and minimally invasive surgery. His early postgraduate training was undertaken in London on the South-East Thames training programme, where he gained his membership in the Royal College of Surgeons (England). His higher surgical Orthopaedic training was undertaken on the Cambridge orthopaedic rotation. He was the chief musculoskeletal resident during his time in Cambridge. This is a clinical leadership programme set up in conjunction with the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge and Addenbrookes Hospital. He was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (Trauma & Orthopaedics) in 2016.
Upon the completion of his specialist training, Mr Lopez undertook further extensive sub-speciality fellowship training in the UK, Germany and Australia. The scope of his fellowship training covered all aspects of primary and revision(re-do) joint replacement surgery, peri-prosthetic joint infection (infection following joint replacement) surgery, as well as Orthopaedic oncology and sarcoma surgery. This fellowship training has enabled Mr Lopez to be able to deal with cases of varying degrees of complexity. In addition to this, he is experienced in the use of computer navigation in joint replacement surgery, as well as minimally invasive techniques.
Following his return to the UK, Mr Lopez worked as a Consultant at The West Suffolk Hospital, before moving to Colchester General Hospital and the ESNEFT trust. His practice encompasses the treatment of conditions affecting the hip and knee, as well as general trauma. He has a strong interest in teaching and training. He was involved in undergraduate teaching of the University of Cambridge students during his time at the West Suffolk. He is also a faculty member for several FRCS (Consultant level fellowship exam) courses for senior surgical trainees. He has several peer-reviewed publications, as well as published book chapters in Orthopaedic textbooks. Most of these involve the topics of revision surgery and peri-prosthetic joint infection; both of which he is extremely passionate about.
