Dr. Craig M. Powell earned both his M.D. with honor and Ph.D. in Neuroscience research at Baylor College of Medicine in 1994 and 1997 respectively. His graduate work with Drs. David Sweatt and Dan Johnston was among the first studies to measure lasting biochemical changes during long-lasting synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. After his Medical Internship year at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Powell trained at the University of California, San Francisco Neurology Residency Program. In his final year, Dr. Powell was chosen to be the Chief Resident in the UCSF Neurology Program. Dr. Powell was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as an undergraduate as well as to Alpha Omega Alpha medical Honor society in medical school.
Currently, Dr. Powell is the Ed and Sue Rose Distinguished Professor in Neurology, a tenured Professor at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center's Depts. of Neurology & Neurotherapeutics, Psychiatry, and Neuroscience and an active member of the Neuroscience Graduate Program. His translational laboratory research program is focused on the molecular mechanisms of learning and memory, synaptic plasticity, and neuropsychiatric disorders such as autism, intellectual disability, and Alzheimer’s. Dr. Powell's clinical Neurology practice is on the inpatient and outpatient Neurology services at the University Hospitals and Parkland Memorial Hospital. Dr. Powell also supervises and teaches Neurology Residents at the Parkland Memorial Hospital outpatient clinics.
