Craig Currie is a Professor of Applied Pharmacoepidemiology at Cardiff University. Craig has had a long-standing interest in the epidemiology and economics of diabetes, and this was the subject of his PhD thesis a long while ago. In recent years Crag and his colleagues made a couple of important contributions to our understanding of the impact of glucose-lowering drugs and glucose control in type 2 diabetes.

Firstly, a highly-cited paper in Diabetologia in 2009 set the scene for a link between differing glucose-lowering drugs and cancer risk in people with diabetes. A further paper published in the Lancet then raised issues about the association of aggressive blood glucose control and all-cause mortality, showing that it was essentially a U-shaped association. This pattern of association has now been replicated several times. More recently, Craig and his team have been focusing on the issue of the safety of insulin use in people with type 2 diabetes.
