Steward is a Consultant in bone marrow transplantation at the Royal Hospital for Children, Bristol, England. His particular interests are the patterns of neutropenia seen in Barth syndrome, optimizing the use of antibiotics, and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in order to prevent infections and fetal presentations of the disease. He has also campaigned for many years that Barth syndrome is seriously underdiagnosed. Dr. Steward has recently obtained permission from the National Health Service in England to provide a national specialist service for the disease, the primary aims of which will be to increase recognition of the disease and to provide a more consistent quality of care for patients whilst minimizing hospital visits. This service is being developed in close partnership with Michaela Damin and her colleagues at the Barth Syndrome Trust.
